PRIMITIVE MAN – Vor 10 Jahren schickten sie aus dem Epizentrum Denver, CO (USA) mit ihrem Debut “Scorn” (2013) seismische Wellen um den Globus - und ließen mit einem Schlag alle Hoffnung auf einen neuen Tag schwinden. Wir gehen alle zurück in den Ur-Schlamm, aus dem wir gekrochen sind, daran lassen PM keinen Zweifel. Jegliches Streben scheint ein jämmerlicher Akt der Verzweiflung im Angesicht der unausweichlichen Katastrophe.

Mit ihrem letzten Album “Insurmountable” (2022) graben sich PM noch tiefer ein in ihre karge Nische, ihren “Death Sludge”. Wenn Riffs von derartig vernichtender Monotonie, dazu prähistorisches (oder post-apokalyptisches?) Gebrüll und markzersetzende Wellen aus Feedback und Noise im Rhythmus einer geradezu ekelhaft und erniedrigend schleppenden Tragik erstmal über dich hinweggerollt sind, bleibt nichts zurück - außer verbrannter Boden und dein kümmerliches Selbst: Ein Häuflein Asche im unablässig wütenden Sturm der Zeit. Haben wir überhaupt jemals wirklich existiert?!

Egal, wie die Frage lautet – nach einem “ja” suchen wir bei PM vergeblich: Alles wird verneint; positive Auflösung gibt es nicht. Ethan McCarthy's triefender, infektiöser Nihilismus hüllt dich in einen alles verschlingenden Schatten, so kalt wie ewige Nacht. PM erschaffen in ihrer brachialen Gesamtästhetik – allem voran durch ihre klaustrophobischen Klangwelten – Mahnmale des Verfalls von solch extremen Ausmaßen, dass sie in den Bereich des Psychedelischen hineinragen. Sowas ist wirklich selten, wenn nicht gar einzigartig. Auf jeden Fall eine Erfahrung der heftigeren Art!

10 years ago, with the release of their debut album “Scorn” (2013), PRIMITVE MAN sent seismic shockwaves from the epicenter Denver, CO (USA) around the globe – making us abandon all hope for a new dawn. We will all crawl back into the primeval slime from where we once came – PM leave no doubt about that – deeming all aspiration merely a pathetic act of desperation in the face of inevitable catastrophe.

With their most recent Album “Insurmountable” (2022) PM are digging themselves deeper into the barren niche they carved out for themselves, their signature “death sludge”. When riffs of such devastating monotony, paired with pre-historic (or post-apocalyptic?) bellow and marrow-dissolving waves of feedback and noise wash over you with the rhythm of downright nauseatingly and humiliatingly dragging tragedy, you are left with nothing – except scorched earth and your puny self: A handful of ash surrendered to the relentlessly raging storms of time. Have we even ever existed at all?!

Regardless the question – looking for affirmation from PM proves futile: Everything is negated, positive denouement is non-existent. Ethan McCarthy’s oozing, infectuous nihilism engulfs you with an all-devouring shadow as cold as eternal night. With their brachial overall aesthetic – first and foremost through their claustrophobic soundscapes - PM are creating accusatory pillars bearing beacons of decay of such obscene dimensions they are extending into the psychedelic realm. A very rare, if not unique experience of the heaviest kind!
